Frequently Asked Questions
With International Letter Mail, you can send documents weighing up to 2 kg. Documents are written, drawn, printed or digital messages and information, e.g. contracts, personal messages or invoices. The items must not contain any goods. For example, the following contents are also considered documents: Digital media (USB memory, CD and DVD) containing messages and information; brochures, catalogs and flyers.
Shipments that have a declared value of goods when sent to non-EU countries with a customs declaration of contents are not considered documents.
When sending digital media with messages and information, we recommend noting on the shipments: "Document on CD/data or USB stick". For documents with a hard cover, we recommend noting: "Document with hard cover/envelope".
Content, Format & Weight
Excluded from postal transportation are items of correspondence,
which do not comply with the conditions set forth in the Universal Postal Convention and the Supplementary Provisions,
that do not comply with the provisions specified in the GTC, and
sent in support of fraudulent acts or with the intention of evading full payment of the relevant charges.
Narcotics and psychotropic substances, as defined by the International Narcotics Board, or other illegal drugs prohibited in the country of destination;
explosive, highly flammable or radioactive substances, medical examination materials and dangerous goods that are not permitted under the Brief International GTC.
obscene items or items that offend common decency;
Counterfeit and pirated items;
Replicas of explosive devices, inactive explosive devices and military material, including replicas of grenades, inactive hand grenades and similar items;
Live animals except: Bees, leeches and silkworms(but not in consignments of value); parasites and exterminators of harmful insects intended to be controlled by such insects and exchanged between officially recognized bodies (but not in consignments of value); flies of the family Drosophilidae exchanged between officially recognized bodies for the purpose of biological research (but not in consignments of value);
Other articles whose importation or distribution is prohibited in the country of destination;
Items that, because of their nature or packaging, may pose a hazard to postal employees and the public or may soil or damage other mail, postal facilities, or the property of others;
Documents in the nature of a current and personal communication exchanged between persons other than the sender and the addressee or persons residing with them;
Bearer instruments of any kind, traveler's checks, platinum, gold or silver in processed or unprocessed form, and jewels, jewelry and other valuables.
Exceptions: These items may be sent in insured mail or, if not precluded by the domestic laws of the country of posting and the country of destination, in sealed envelopes as registered mail.
Consignments containing weapons, in particular firearms, or parts thereof, imitation weapons or ammunition.
In accordance with EU regulations* (No. 272/2009 and No. 300/2008) and the Aviation Security Act, it must be ensured for all freight and mail shipments to be transported by air that the shipments do not contain any items prohibited by EU regulation in air freight or air mail. Accordingly, all mail to be transported by air is subjected to the legally required aviation security checks.
Only items classified as secure may then be transported by air.
Please also note the existing transport exclusions according to the Universal Postal Convention and the IATA dangerous goods regulations.
In addition to explosive, highly flammable or other hazardous materials, more mundane items may also give rise to complaints. The following, non-exhaustive, list provides some examples of contents not suitable for airmail shipment:
Gasoline lighters
Paint and varnish cans with hazardous contents
Compressed gas packages (aerosol cans)
Sparklers
Wet batteries
Zinc-carbon batteries
Lithium batteries/rechargeable batteries for operating electronic devices
Toys that are in the shape of weapons or weapon parts
Global Mail will, in accordance with MKB Global Mail & Freight GmbH's Terms and Conditions, either transport airmail shipments that are determined to be potentially hazardous in the course of screening under applicable regulations by another suitable mode of transportation (e.g., land or sea) or return them to the sender.
Dangerous Goods
Tracking and tracing for international letter mail items always requires a shipment code (10-digit registered mail number). For this reason, the additional service Registered Mail International always offers the option of tracking and tracing.
Most foreign postal companies (country of destination) also provide us with their receipt log for information purposes when processing incoming mail. Many postal companies provide further information.
